Frequently Asked Questions

Occupation refers to the tasks and activities that occupy our time.  Occupational Therapists (also known as OTs) use a range of strategies to break down the barriers to participation in wanted and needed occupations.  Each OT will have a unique set of skills depending on their continuing professional development.

Developmental trauma refers to the impacts or barriers to development specifically caused by adverse experiences caused during childhood.  Due to the significant brain development that occurs during pregnancy and first 5 years of life, adverse experiences during this time can be significantly disruptive to a child's development.

Developmental Trauma can be addressed using therapeutic treatment, and collaboration of adult care givers.

Sensory Processing is the brain receiving sensations, processing the information through the brain to generate an appropriate response.  If there is anything that impacts on this process, then the response generated does not match the need.

Sensory Integration is when different sensory based information is processed and made sense of in an integrated way to make sense of the experience.  When integration does not occur accurately, the system can become confused and overwhelmed.

Sensory Regulation is principle that sensory information stimulates the brain functional action.  If there is too much or not enough sensory information, the brain struggles to achieve optimal arousal (stimulation) for function.

There are a range of treatments available to address these concerns.
